DO I NEED A SPECIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE?
For their Canadian vacation, many travelers ask themselves if they need to obtain an international driver's license or a special license to drive an RV in Canada. We will not keep you in suspense any longer: the answer is no.
In fact, you only need to hold a valid driver's license issued by your country of residence. There are 2 conditions to be met in order for your license to be accepted:
1- Your license must use the Latin alphabet.
2- Each driver (principal and additional) must have held his or her license for a minimum of 12 months. In addition, rental companies will only rent to clients 21 years of age and over.
European residents are required to hold a "B" license. Unfortunately, holders of a French "permis blanc" are not allowed to drive in Canada. The law concerning the French "permis blanc" is quite restrictive and allows the holder to drive a vehicle only for serious reasons or in the event of an emergency.
Swiss residents must now hold a "pink license".
IMPORTANT NOTE: The client must use a credit card in the name of the principal driver. When you pick up your RV, it is therefore obligatory to present a driver's license and a credit card with the same name. More often than not, rental agencies will require a deposit in the form of an "authorization" on the credit card to cover the amount of the deductible payable in the event of an accident. |
