It is believed that the Native peoples of the Americas first arrived from Asia millions of years ago by an ice bridge that stretched from Siberia to Alaska. Some settled in Canada, while others decided to continue their journey south. When European explorers arrived, Canada was populated by many different First Nations, some nomadic and some sedentary, who were hunters, fishermen or farmers. The first contact between Natives and Europeans occurred about 1,000 years ago when when Viking explorers from Iceland settled briefly on what is now the island of Newfoundland. However, European exploration of Canada would not begin until 600 years later...
