Beautiful mountain scenery: peaks, glaciers, lakes and waterfalls

Peter Cuk Saturday September 5, 2026

What we liked: the beautiful mountain scenery: peaks, glaciers, lakes and waterfalls; and the drives that linked these together. Stand outs included:
Albahasa Glacier
Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Maligne Lake
Takakkaw Falls, Helmcken Falls, Saphats Falls, Dawson Falls
Rogers Pass, Icefields Parkway.

Little gems: Hope (go to the craft shop if you are into knitting or handicrafts); Cathedral Grove (en route to Ucluelet); Ucluelet; Butchart Gardens (Victoria)

Hotels were generally good tourist class hotels. The lack of a/c in Jasper and the poorly placed a/c in Whistler made these hotels disappointing.

Places that missed our expectations: Okanagan Valley - the wineries were virtually devoid of local wines because of the 'big freeze' of 2024 (OV wineries are largely using grapes from Washington State to make wines while the vines recover); Clearwater (other than the waterfalls noted above) and Whistler (too big, too touristy).

The Authentik Canada roadbook was invaluable. We used a hardcopy rather than the app.

Final comment on wildfire smoke - it impacted the first week of our trip - Okanagan Valley, Revelstoke, Lake Louise, Banff. Not an Authentik Canada responsibility of course, but for those planning to do the Legendary Splendour trip, think of the time of year. Also think about the summer holiday crowds.
