5 ways to save on car hire in Canada
The car is often the best way to discover Canada’s great outdoors. But the price you see at first is not always the price you’ll pay. Insurance, one-way fees and optional extras can quickly add up. Here are five tips to help you save on car rental in Canada.
1. Book as early as possible

If there's one piece of advice we can give you, it's this: don't leave booking your car until the last minute.
In 2026, Authentik travelers booked their rental car 112 days before their departure on average, which is about 3.7 months in advance.
Over the last 12 years, bookings have been made on average 87 days before departure, and the majority of our travelers book their vehicle between 80 and 110 days before their arrival in Canada.
| Peak seasons | Demand level | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (June to August) | 🔴 Very high | Book as soon as your dates are confirmed. |
| School holidays | 🟠 High | Plan your booking several months in advance. |
| Autumn colors (September to October) | 🟠 High | Availability quickly decreases in some regions. |
| Christmas and New Year | 🟠 High | Book as soon as your itinerary is defined. |
2. Compare airport and city car hire locations
Picking up your rental car directly at the airport is convenient after a long flight, but it's not always the most advantageous option.
The rental price depends on several criteria, such as the city, season, vehicle category, or car availability. Depending on the case, an agency located downtown can be cheaper... but the opposite is also possible.
| Pickup location | Good to know |
|---|---|
| 🛬 Airport | More convenient upon arrival and generally more vehicle choices. However, specific fees may apply. |
| 🌆 Downtown | Can sometimes be more economical if you spend a few days in the city before your road trip. Agencies sometimes have a more limited fleet. |
If you spend a few days in Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto, or Vancouver before your road trip, take advantage of public transport, then pick up your vehicle when you leave the city.
You could thus save:
- several days of rental
- parking fees
- part of the costs related to urban traffic

3. Check one-way hire fees

A one-way rental consists of picking up your rental car in one city and returning it in another.
Very practical for a road trip, this option can, however, incur drop-off fees.
The amount of these fees varies according to several factors:
- the renter
- the distance between the two agencies
- the vehicle category
- the season
- car availability
If your itinerary is still flexible, take the time to compare a one-way trip with a loop road trip. In our opinion, this is one of the simplest ways to reduce the cost of your rental when possible.

4. Choose the right car category for your trip
The cheapest vehicle is not always the best choice. To choose well, consider the number of travelers, luggage, but also the kilometers you will travel and the desired comfort during your road trip.
| Your situation | Recommended vehicle |
|---|---|
| Couple with little luggage | Compact or intermediate car |
| Family with 2 children | Spacious sedan or compact SUV |
| Several suitcases or bulky equipment | Intermediate SUV or minivan |
| Winter trip or in Western Canada | Compact or intermediate SUV |
On a road trip of several weeks, a few centimeters of trunk space or a little more room onboard can make all the difference.
Before booking, also check:
- trunk volume
- number of seats
- included equipment
- traveler reviews

5. Watch out for insurance and optional extras
At the rental counter, several insurances and options may be offered to you. Before accepting, take a few minutes to check what is already included in your reservation.
Specifically check if you are covered by:
- your bank card
- your travel insurance
- your personal car insurance
- your reservation contract
The most common options offered are:
- additional driver
- child seat
- roadside assistance
- supplementary insurance
- prepaid fuel.
In our car rental comparator, each offer details the insurances, included options, as well as any exclusions. This way, you can easily compare offers according to your needs.
