Stewart is located on the Alaska–British Columbia border. Over the years, this former mining town has gradually been transformed into a charming tourist destination. The area offers a very good chance of seeing grizzly bears in their natural habitat. Wild bears spend the summer months fishing the salmon that are making their way upstream to spawn.
Since you are so close to Alaska, why not drive the extra few minutes to the tiny American village of Hyder? And if you want to follow the time-honoured travellers' tradition, get "Hyderized" at the Glacier Inn by downing a shot of 95% Everclear, an intense experience that will require a designated driver to get you back to Stewart!
Fish Creek
The best place for bear-watching is the Fish Creek Wildlife Observation Site in nearby Hyder (Alaska). The site features a raised viewing platform from which bears can be observed as they fish for chum and pink salmon in the clear shallow waters of Fish Creek. The best time to see grizzlies and black bears in action is in July and August.
Salmon Glacier
Just north of Stewart, on the Canadian side of the border, is a spectacular natural attraction: Salmon Glacier, one of the largest glaciers in Canada. You can drive above this spectacular glacier and admire the view and the sun glittering on the eternal ice and snow. You will feel like you are on top of the world!
