Ready to make some people jealous on Instagram? Between turquoise lakes, the wild beaches of Vancouver Island, and the scenic glacier routes, the Canadian West is full of backdrops that grab attention even without a filter.

Whether you're traveling with a professional camera or just your phone, here are 15 spots that are likely to put your photo gallery and storage space to the test...

THE LAKES OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS

1. Moraine Lake

We might be biased, but Moraine Lake pretty much ticks all the boxes for a dream Canadian landscape. It is one of the most iconic photo spots in the Canadian West.

📸 Why is this spot a must-see? Moraine Lake is famous for its turquoise waters and the spectacular Valley of the Ten Peaks that surrounds it, one of the most photographed landscapes in the Canadian Rockies.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? From the Rockpile Trail viewpoint, accessible with a few minutes' walk.
🌅 When to go? At sunrise or late in the day to enjoy the most beautiful light.

Even though we know the Rockies by heart, Moraine Lake always has the same effect on us. With each visit, we promise ourselves one last photo before leaving... and then, we end up taking ten more. Oops!

Authentik Tip: Since 2023, access to Moraine Lake is prohibited for personal vehicles. Remember to book your Parks Canada shuttle several weeks in advance during high season, especially between June and September.

2. Peyto Lake

If there's one lake that our travelers unanimously love, it's Peyto Lake. With its wolf-like silhouette and dazzling turquoise color, it has everything to become one of your favorite photos from your trip.

📸 Why is this spot a must-see? Located in the heart of Banff National Park, Peyto Lake offers a beautiful contrast between its blue waters, the surrounding mountains, and the forest that almost spills into the lake.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? From the Peyto Lake viewpoint, accessible after a short fifteen-minute walk from the parking lot.
🌅 When to go? In the morning for optimal light or late in the day for a more peaceful atmosphere.

Peyto Lake has that little something that instantly makes phones and cameras pop out of their bags. It's easily accessible and incredible in any season, making it one of the essential stops on the Icefields Parkway.

Authentik Tip: Peyto Lake is particularly stunning between June and September, when the glacial waters take on their characteristic turquoise color. To avoid crowds in summer, opt for a visit early in the morning or late in the day.

3. Lake Louise

You've probably already seen a picture of Lake Louise without knowing it. And once you're there, you'll probably understand why it has become one of the stars of the Canadian Rockies!

The spot at a glance Details
📸 Why is this spot a must-see? Lake Louise brings together all the ingredients for a perfect photo: an incredibly blue glacial lake, majestic peaks, and the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise right on the water's edge.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? From the lake's shores or by taking the Lakeshore Trail which runs along the water for nearly 2 km.
🌅 When to go? Early in the morning to enjoy soft light and avoid crowds, especially in summer.

It's easy to see why Lake Louise appears on so many postcards. The hardest part, ultimately, is managing to put your camera away.

Authentik Testimony: "Even after seeing hundreds of photos of Lake Louise before going there, seeing it with my own eyes remains a very striking moment! This almost unreal blue color is even more beautiful from the "Little Beehive" viewpoint. In my opinion, you can't leave Lake Louise without doing this hike! However, remember to arrive early (before sunrise) if you hope to find parking because parking lots fill up quickly! You can also book the Parks Canada shuttle for peace of mind." Mélaine, Marketing Coordinator

4. Emerald Lake

Between Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake sometimes flies under the radar. And yet, it's often one of the most beautiful surprises of the trip for our travelers.

📸 Why is this spot a must-see? With its emerald green waters, its iconic wooden bridge, and the surrounding mountains, Emerald Lake offers a postcard-worthy setting.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? From the bridge that crosses the end of the lake or the trail that runs along the shore to capture the reflections of the mountains in the water.
🌅 When to go? Early in the morning to enjoy soft light and a perfectly calm lake.

Emerald Lake often tends to live in the shadow of its famous neighbors in Banff. However, that's precisely what makes it charming. The atmosphere there is generally more peaceful, and the photo opportunities are just as enjoyable.

Authentik Testimony: "The Rockies are simply SPECTACULAR. I am amazed, captivated by all this raw nature with its mountains, forests, and blue lakes with incredible colors. Emerald Lake is one of those places that left the biggest impression on me." Marion, Local Advisor.

SCENIC ROUTES

5. Icefields Parkway

If your co-pilot loves photography, plan a little more time than expected. Over the 230 kilometers connecting Lake Louise to Jasper, every turn seems designed to make you want to stop.

🎯 Where to take the best photo? Top stops include Athabasca Glacier, Bow Lake, Peyto Lake, and the Big Bend viewpoint.
🌅 When to go? In summer and early autumn, when the road is fully accessible and the lakes display their most beautiful colors.

Authentik Testimonial: "Having lived in Jasper for 3 months, I fell in love with this region and its breathtaking landscapes. The Icefields Parkway is one of the places that impressed me the most. Between the majestic peaks of the Rockies, the glaciers, the turquoise waters of the lakes, and the presence of wild animals, every kilometer offers its share of discoveries. Regardless of the time of day, the landscapes seem to transform and become even more impressive. I hope to have the chance to relive this experience one day, but this time in winter, to discover this mythical road in a whole new light." Tanya, Sales Coordinator.

6. Sea to Sky Highway

The 120 kilometers separating Vancouver from Whistler pass surprisingly quickly. It must be said that the road offers enough beautiful panoramas to keep your eyes glued to the scenery from beginning to end.

The spot at a glance Details
📸 Why is this spot a must-see? Few places allow you to admire the ocean, mountains, and forests of British Columbia all on the same road, unlike this one.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? The viewpoints of Porteau Cove, Sea to Sky Gondola, and Shannon Falls are among the most photogenic on the route.
🌅 When to go? At the end of the day to enjoy the golden light on Howe Sound and the surrounding mountains.

The Sea to Sky Highway, in other words "the road from the sea to the sky", perfectly lives up to its name. After a few kilometers, you will probably stop counting the "Wow! Look at that!". (And no, we're almost not exaggerating.)

Authentik Tip: Don't just connect Vancouver to Whistler. Plan several stops along the way, especially at Shannon Falls and the Sea to Sky Gondola, two of the most beautiful photo spots in the region.

7. Bow Valley Parkway

Some travelers head directly to Lake Louise via the Trans-Canada Highway. We, on the other hand, tend to choose the Bow Valley Parkway. Forget cruise control, here you drive slower, but you enjoy the scenery much more!

📸 Why is this spot a must-see? This road offers magnificent views of the mountains, forests, and Bow Valley, while also being one of the best places to observe wildlife.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? The viewpoints of Morant's Curve and Castle Mountain are among the most photographed stops on the road.
🌅 When to go? Early morning or late afternoon, when the light is most beautiful and animals are most active.

On paper, it's just a road connecting Banff to Lake Louise. In reality, it's often one of travelers' favorite journeys (and it's one of ours too!)

Authentik Tip: Always keep your camera handy. The Bow Valley Parkway is one of the best places in the Rockies to observe wildlife, especially at sunrise and sunset.

NATURAL WONDERS

8. Spirit Island

No road or trail to reach Spirit Island, you'll first have to play sailor for a cruise on Maligne Lake. Isolated in the middle of the mountains, this small island has become one of Jasper's most photographed symbols.

📸 Why is this spot a must-see? Its unique location in the middle of Maligne Lake and the spectacular scenery surrounding it make it one of the most iconic landscapes in the Canadian Rockies.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? From the viewpoint accessible during the cruise on Maligne Lake.
🌅 When to go? Between June and September, when the lake is ice-free and cruises are operating.

It's the kind of place where you say to yourself: "Come on, five more minutes." Then twenty minutes later, you're still in the same spot admiring the scenery.

Authentik Tip: Tickets for Maligne Lake cruises sell out quickly in summer. Book your excursion in advance to be sure you can admire Spirit Island during your visit to Jasper.

9. Helmcken Falls

The Rockies have their turquoise lakes. Wells Gray has Helmcken Falls. And frankly, they have nothing to envy them in terms of "wow" effect!

The spot at a glance Details
📸 Why is this spot a must-see? Helmcken Falls are the fourth highest waterfalls in Canada and plunge into an immense volcanic canyon, creating a spectacular landscape.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? From the main viewpoint, accessible a few minutes' walk from the parking lot.
🌅 When to go? In summer to enjoy the lush vegetation or in winter when the ice forms impressive natural sculptures around the falls.

The little extra about Helmcken Falls is that they completely change their appearance in winter. The frozen spray accumulates at the bottom of the canyon to form a huge ice cone.

Authentik Tip: If your itinerary allows, plan a few hours to explore Wells Gray Provincial Park. Often called the "waterfall park", it is home to several other remarkable falls just a few kilometers from Helmcken Falls.

10. Takakkaw Falls

In the heart of Yoho National Park, Takakkaw Falls immediately catch the eye. And at 373 meters high, they certainly make an impression!

📸 Why is this spot a must-see? With their impressive height and powerful flow, Takakkaw Falls offer one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Canadian Rockies.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? From the trail that leads to the base of the falls, where you can fully appreciate their dizzying height.
🌅 When to go? In spring and early summer, when melting snow feeds the falls and significantly increases their flow.

The word "Takakkaw" actually means "magnificent" in the Cree language. For once, the name doesn't leave much to the imagination.

Authentik Tip: Bring a raincoat or protection for your camera if you get close to the base of the falls. The spray can be surprising, especially when the flow is strong.

11. Maligne Canyon

The Maligne Canyon trail has several bridges. Each offers a different angle on the canyon and provides a good excuse to continue a little further. Take the time to explore several bridges. The view changes much more than you might imagine!

📸 Why is this spot a must-see? With walls that can reach over 50 meters deep, Maligne Canyon offers a unique setting found nowhere else in Western Canada.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? From the various bridges spanning the canyon, especially bridges 1 and 2 which offer the best views of the waterfalls and gorges.
🌅 When to go? In summer to admire the turquoise waters and waterfalls, or in winter when the canyon transforms into a true ice palace.

Authentik Tip: The main trail is easy to access and offers several viewpoints in less than two hours. For the best photo conditions, opt for an early morning visit before the groups arrive. @@@/fun-fact@@@

12. Capilano Suspension Bridge

Be warned, if you don't like heights, this crossing might leave you with a memorable experience. Suspended 70 meters above the Capilano River, this iconic bridge crosses one of the most beautiful forests in the Vancouver area.

The spot at a glance Details
📸 Why is this spot a must-see? Between the suspension bridge, cliff-hanging walkways, and canopy trails, the photo opportunities are numerous and original.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? From the center of the bridge to capture the forest perspective or from the Cliffwalk path for an impressive view of the Capilano River.
🌅 When to go? Early in the morning to avoid crowds or late in the day when the light filters through the forest.

Capilano proves that it's not just mountains and lakes that impress in Western Canada. Here, the experience is lived in the heart of the forest, suspended among ancient trees and walkways.

Authentik Tip: The entrance ticket also includes the Treetops Adventure and the Cliffwalk. Take the time to explore the entire site to discover the most original photo angles.

VANCOUVER ISLAND

13. Long Beach

Long Beach reminds us that you don't always need activities or attractions to have a good time on Vancouver Island.

📸 Why is this spot a must-see? Long Beach offers typical Canadian West Coast landscapes with its endless beaches, powerful waves, and spectacular sunsets.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? From the rocky headlands at the south end of the beach or directly with your feet in the sand at sunset.
🌅 When to go? Late in the day to enjoy the best light and admire the sun disappearing into the Pacific Ocean.

Depending on the time of day, the tide, and the weather, Long Beach can offer a completely different atmosphere. A good reason not to settle for just one visit.

Authentik Tip: Always keep an eye on the ocean. It's not uncommon to spot whales offshore or bald eagles soaring along the coast, especially in spring and autumn.

14. Telegraph Cove

Small in size, Telegraph Cove nonetheless has a lot of character. Its houses on stilts and historic harbor make it one of the most endearing villages on Vancouver Island.

📸 Why is this spot a must-see? Its historic wooden buildings, picturesque docks, and authentic atmosphere offer a unique setting on the Pacific coast.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? From the wooden boardwalk that runs along the harbor or at the end of the docks with the colorful houses in the background.
🌅 When to go? Early in the morning to enjoy the reflections on the water or late in the day when the light gilds the village facades.

Telegraph Cove is one of those places that make you want to capture the moment. Between fishing boats, houses on stilts, and marine landscapes, the charm works from the first steps on the docks.

Authentik Tip: Take advantage of your visit to Telegraph Cove to participate in an orca watching excursion. The area is considered one of the best places in Canada to observe these impressive marine mammals.

15. Mystic Beach

The reward comes at the end of the trail! Mystic Beach combines everything we love about the west coast of Vancouver Island: a wild beach, steep cliffs, and a waterfall that cascades directly onto the sand.

The spot at a glance Details
📸 Why is this spot a must-see? Mystic Beach brings together everything that makes the Pacific coast charming: lush forest, wild beach, rock formations, and a seaside waterfall.
🎯 Where to take the best photo? From the beach facing the waterfall or near the rocks that border the bay to capture the entire landscape.
🌅 When to go? Late in the day to enjoy softer light and a particularly photogenic atmosphere.

The tide constantly transforms the landscape. Depending on the time of day, some parts of the beach appear, while others disappear under the Pacific waves.

Authentik Tip: The trail to Mystic Beach can be muddy after rain. Bring good walking shoes to fully enjoy this little adventure.

Let's be honest, chances are your phone or memory card will return a little fuller than expected. But after all, that's also what a road trip in Western Canada is about: collecting landscapes you'll remember long after you return.

And if one of these spots ends up on your itinerary, don't hesitate to tag us on Instagram or send us your photos. We love discovering Western Canada through the eyes of our travelers. And who knows, you might stumble upon a little secret spot that deserves its place in this selection!
