Many travellers dream of seeing whales during their trip to Quebec.

But where can you see whales in Tadoussac? When is the best time to go? And should you choose a boat cruise, a zodiac excursion or a kayaking trip?

We answer all your questions in this complete guide to whale watching in Tadoussac.

Why go whale watching in Tadoussac?

Tadoussac is one of the best places in the world for whale watching.

Located where the Saguenay Fjord meets the Saint Lawrence River, Tadoussac is known as one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world.

Every year, several species of marine mammals come to feed in the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Saguenay–Saint Lawrence Marine Park.

This exceptional abundance of food attracts:

  • minke whales
  • fin whales
  • belugas
  • and sometimes even the largest animal on Earth: the blue whale.

What makes the experience in Tadoussac particularly special is just how accessible it is.

There’s no need to spend hours out at sea in the hope of spotting a whale. At times, you can even see them directly from the shore, just a few minutes from the village.

How can you watch whales in Tadoussac?

Whale watching by boat

On average, whale excursions last 3 hours.

A boat cruise is the most comfortable way to watch whales in Tadoussac.

Thanks to the size of the vessel, the crossing is generally more stable, making it an excellent option for families with children or travellers prone to seasickness.

On board, it’s easy to move between indoor and outdoor viewing areas, take in the different views across the river, and listen to commentary from passionate naturalist guides.

Some companies even offer underwater cameras, allowing you to watch whales beneath the surface.

Whale watching by zodiac

Bring warm clothes, even in summer, for your zodiac excursion.

For a more exhilarating experience and a closer encounter with whales, several companies also offer zodiac excursions departing from Tadoussac.

Faster and more manoeuvrable, zodiacs allow you to cover more ground on the river and provide a more action-packed experience. On board, a naturalist guide also shares plenty of fascinating information for both adults and children alike.

Depending on conditions on the Saint Lawrence, the ride can be quite sporty, so this activity is not recommended for:

  • pregnant women
  • children under 2 years old
  • people with back or joint problems.

Good to know: although zodiacs can sometimes get you closer to the whales, strict marine park regulations govern approach distances in order to protect marine mammals.

Whale watching by kayak

Sea kayaking to watch whales is an experience you'll remember for a long time!

Watching whales by kayak is undoubtedly the most immersive experience you can have in Tadoussac.

Accompanied by a guide, you’ll paddle along the Saint Lawrence in spectacular surroundings, with the Saguenay Fjord as your backdrop.

The activity still requires a good level of fitness and depends heavily on weather conditions on the river.

In the event of strong winds or poor weather, excursions may be cancelled for safety reasons.

For travellers looking for a quieter and more intimate experience, kayaking remains an exceptional option. Speak to our local advisors to add this activity to your road trip!

Whale watching from the shore

La Pointe-de-l'Islet in Tadoussac
The starting point for Pointe-de-l'Islet is near the marina and the trail is very easy to access. Allow 20 minutes to complete it.

In Tadoussac, you don’t necessarily need to join an excursion to have the chance to see whales.

The Pointe-de-l’Islet trail is one of the best places to try spotting whale spouts directly from the shore. Just a few metres away, the Marine Mammal Interpretation Centre is also well worth a visit to learn more about these fascinating creatures.

The Tadoussac dunes also offer superb views over the Saint Lawrence River, particularly at sunset.

Just before boarding the ferry to Tadoussac, the Pointe-Noire Interpretation and Observation Centre also provides excellent marine mammal viewing platforms.

Why we love it: watching a whale suddenly surface while you’re simply sitting on the rocks is still one of the most magical experiences you can have in Tadoussac.

What are the best tips for whale watching in Tadoussac?

Travelers from all over the world come to Tadoussac to watch whales.

Choose the right season

Whale season in Tadoussac, as it’s commonly known, runs from May through to the end of October.

Although whales can be seen throughout the summer, September and October often offer some of the best viewing conditions, with particularly high marine mammal activity in the Saguenay–Saint Lawrence Marine Park.

July and August remain the busiest months, especially for families travelling during the school holidays.

Authentik Tip: while morning excursions are often recommended, afternoon outings can actually be a better choice here. Fog is common on the river in the morning, and visibility can remain limited until it clears.

Book your cruise

Whale cruises are very popular in summer.

In Tadoussac, several companies run daily excursions throughout the summer season.

In July and August, booking your cruise in advance is strongly recommended, especially if you’re travelling as a family or hoping for a specific departure time.

Outside the peak season, it’s usually easier to book on the day, although popular time slots can still fill up quickly when the weather is good.

How to spot a whale

Whale watching sometimes requires a little patience… and a keen eye.

The first thing to look out for is the whale’s spout, visible as a white spray above the water.

When conditions are calm, it’s sometimes even possible to hear the blow before spotting the whale at the surface.

Once you’ve seen one, keep watching the same area: whales often surface several times before diving deeper for around ten minutes.

Good to know: binoculars can make a real difference, particularly if you’re whale watching from the shore.

"Whale watching in Tadoussac is one of those experiences that stays with you long after your trip to Quebec. Whether from the shore, aboard a boat, by zodiac or by kayak, every outing on the Saint Lawrence brings its own surprises and unforgettable moments. With a little patience, good timing… and a touch of luck, you may even spot the impressive spout of a blue whale off the coast of Tadoussac." Mélaine

Hello Birgit,
Thanks for your message and welcome to Canada!
In November, it becomes quite rare to spot whales in Tadoussac. Most species migrate south when the temperatures drop, and whale-watching tours close by late October.
That said, the area remains stunning even in November, think misty fjords, quiet villages, and a chance to spot seals or seabirds instead.
Enjoy your stay in Quebec !

Hi
If I go to Tadusak in the last week of July, will I be able to see humpback whales?
And how is it most efficient to get from Toronto to Tadusak?

Hi! Thanks so much for your message.
Yes, absolutely—early June is a great time to see whales in Tadoussac, and you definitely have a good chance of spotting belugas, as they are present in the area year-round. In addition to belugas, you might also see minke whales and even humpbacks starting to arrive for the season.
For the best experience, we recommend booking a tour with Croisières AML. They offer both large boat cruises (more comfortable and stable, great for families or those wanting a relaxed ride) and zodiac tours (smaller and more adventurous, offering a closer-to-the-water experience). It really depends on your preferences!
Be sure to book in advance, especially for zodiac tours, as spots can fill up quickly during peak whale-watching season.
Wishing you an unforgettable time in Tadoussac! ????

Thank you for the answer! And is there a special time of the day to improve the chance of seeing the whales/belugas? like early in the morning due to feeding time ?!

You're very welcome!
There isn’t really a specific time of day that guarantees better whale or beluga sightings in Tadoussac—whales can be spotted throughout the day, and their presence tends to depend more on tides and luck than on feeding times like with some other animals.
That said, morning tours often benefit from calmer waters and better visibility, which can make the experience more enjoyable, especially for photography or if you're prone to motion sickness. Afternoon and early evening tours are just as likely to offer great sightings, though conditions can be a bit windier.
In short: you have a good chance of seeing whales and belugas no matter the time—just pick the time of day that works best for you in terms of comfort and schedule!
Let me know if you have any other questions—happy to help!

when is the best time of year to see belugas in Tadoussac? I'm interested in September after the summer crowd season. Will it be cold at night there to camp? Can you suggest campgrounds nearby? Thank you
Answer

Hi Rachel,
September is actually a great time to see belugas in Tadoussac! The summer crowds thin out, but belugas are still present in the St. Lawrence River. While they are there year-round, September offers good chances for sightings, along with other whale species like minke, humpbacks, and blue whales. I suggest booking a morning or late afternoon tour, as that is when they feed and are more present.
For camping, my personal favourite is Mer et Monde Écotours. If you are ready to book in advance (cause they book out quickly), you can get a platform camping spot right by the river, so you might hear whales breathing at night and you might even see them from your spot in the morning. Other options include Camping Tadoussac and Camping Bon Désir.
Nighttime can get quite chilly, dropping to around 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F), bring a warm sleeping bag (rated for 0°C/32°F or lower) and thermal layers for comfort.
I hope this helps !

I want to spend 1 day in the Tadoussac area with my wife and 2-year-old son. We want to see both the fjord and whales.
Because my son is so young, are Zodiacs a bad idea?
If we take an AML whale watching tour from Tadoussac, will we see enough of the fjord to be satisfied?
Or should we take a navettesdufjord cruise to L’Anse-Saint-Jean and back? I fear then I wouldn't get to see whales though...

Hello Byron,
For safety reasons, children under the age of 6 are not allowed on the Zodiac. If you want to see whales, I would strongly recommend taking the “Whale-Watching Cruise in Tadoussac and Saguenay Fjord Exploration” option on the AML website. That way, you’re guaranteed to see whales and explore a bit of the fjord.
With the Fjord shuttles, you’ll be more in the heart of the fjord, but you won’t see whales during your trip.
Have a lovely day!
